Season 1 Episode 10: Nightmares

This was one of the top three best episodes in the first season and one that may even be top 20 out of the entire series. Everyones nightmares are coming true.

Buffy sees the clock move fast as she is taking a test, Willow has to sing, Xander shows up to class in his underwear, Giles is losing the ability to read, and Cordelia is hideous looking. All the while Buffy continues to see this young boy around campus. I won't spoil the ending for ya on this one in case you didn't see it. It's a must see Season 1 ep and you will enjoy it. Funny, sad, interesting, crazy!

8 stakes out of 10!

Season 1 Episode 9: The Puppet Show

This was a decent episode in comparison to others in the first season. Giles is in charge of the schools talent show and the new Principal believes that Buffy, Willow, and Xander are troublemakers and forces them to be in it. This is not what the gang would like to do.

There is a kid who's act is ventriloquism and it seems his dummy is possessed by a demon hunter. He helps Buffy and the gang get the baddie and save the day again. Lots of body parts, or organs shall I say in this one. Two hearts are taken and a brain. Yumm!

This is the first episode for Armin Shimerman who plays the Principal Snyder, who replaces the eaten Principle Flutie. He is great and has many good lines in this. He is a tough little guy who basically loathes kids, a perfect man for the job.

Season 1 Episode 8: I, Robot...You Jane

Well lucky for me my DVD was messed up and wouldn't play this one. From what my wife tells me that is a good thing because TWOP rated it the worst episode ever I guess, or close to it. I vagulely remember this but I am sure it sucked. So skip it if you want. Basic jist is Willow thinks she has a new boyfriend that she talks to on the internet but it turns out to be a trapped soul of a demon. Buffy kills him in the end. Ms. Calendar is introduced in this episode. She is the computer teacher and she plays a bigger part in later episodes.

1 stake out of 10 because my wife says so!

Season 1 Episode 7: Angel

This is like a first time review as I have never gotten past the first 10 minutes of this one in the past because I saw it was the Angel episode and turned away as fast as I could. I just don't like this storyline that much.

It wasn't as bad as I always thought it was. There were a few shots of Angel that made it look like I was watching a new version of Ghost because he looked so much like Swayze that it freaked me out a little. ROAD HOUSE!! Oops, sorry.

This is the episode that Buffy finds out our little Angel is a vampire. But not just any vampire, a vampire with a soul. So we get to hear his tragic plight of being one of the meanest and baddest Vamps in the world to a little scared kitten who steals blood from the Red Cross to feed his appetite. Boo hoo. At least Darla gets dusted cause she was just annoying. If only Angel could have killed her off 5 eps in.

There was nothing all that funny in this and it was just a lot of blah. So not much interesting things for me to write about. You can skip it if you never saw it or plan to watch these yourself. All you need to know is poor Angel has a soul. I am sure he repeats it in other episodes.

Season 1 Episode 6: The Pack

This episode is great for two reasons, plastic fake looking not so scary Hyena's and Principal Flutie gets eaten by hus students, Xander included. It's a very cheesy episode and not anything to write home about. It was humorous to watch Xander try and play a badass but other than that it was pretty flat.

So far I can understand why I never got into Buffy right away. I think I eventually started watching late 3rd season before it ever grabbed me. All I know is I can't wait to get through season 1 and get into the good stuff.

Watch this one for the great Hyena's!

Season 1 Episode 5: Never Kill a Boy on the First Date

Poor Buffy, all alone, no one to love her. Well this ep starts a small chain of episodes on Buffy and the boys. I was trying to think about which of her many boyfriends did I like the best. Like Rory Gilmore, she made some poor choices. Riley was a goof, Angel was a demon, Spike was a demon and cool. I guess Spike wins. Oh well, gotta long way to go to get to that fun.

Buffy is enamoured by Owen, a booky weird boy from High School that like to read poems about death and stare blankly into space. At the same time Buffy is wearing knee high boots with short skits while trying to be a girl instead of help Giles take care of the coming of the anointed one who will reek havoc upon the world. Basic jist is Buffy goes on date, Giles gets cornered by vampires in a funeral home, and the hilarity ensues. Owen ends up helping in a not so helpful way and then decides he like Buffy for the danger and hopes their next date will be going out at 3:00am and getting into a bar fight. I am curious how two high school students are going to get into a bar and one that is still open past 2:ooam. Hmmmm...

I vaguely remembered this episode but I enjoyed it. There are some really funny scenes, especially the one in the Bronze between Buffy, Owen, Angel, Willow, and Xander. Speaking of Xanman, he really has the hots for Buffy and almost let it be known. Poor Willow.

Season 1 Episode 4 The Teachers Pet

Ahh, the first Xander episode. My wife made a good comment in that in the 3 previous episodes they didn't make Xander as nerdy as they did from this episode on. It is weird, he was kind of hip but geeky and now right away in this episode he is downright dorky. Oh well.

Buffy befriends a teacher right off the bat and soon after he is beheaded. Always fun. Buffy and the gang think it may be a new vampire that Angel warned Buffy about. The substitute who replaces the headless teacher seems to have gotten a great amount of attention from all the boys in the school, even Xander who has been goo goo gaa gaa over Buffy until now.

As Buffy seeks out the vamp who killed her teacher she sees the Vamp cross paths with the hot little sub and it runs away in fear making Buffy think that she could be the demon. Turns out she was right, the teacher is a Praying Mantis who is trying to collect virgin men to help her lay and fertilize her eggs. Of course Xander fits the mold and he finds himself in a cage and about to be mated with and then eaten. But Buffy saves the day and Xander lives another day to make a complete fool of himself.

The writing is definitely getting better and more importantly the camera work is as well. We are learning more and more about each character and they are all starting to get their own voice. There is some good one liners in here and Giles is getting funnier each and every episode. I like the monsters of the week eps but I know, or at least I think I remember that some heavy duty boring Angel episodes are on their way and I can't say I am looking forward to them. I hated Angel on Buffy but loved him on his own show. Oh well, it can't all be perfect, right?

Season 1 Episode 3: The Witch

Again, it's been some years since I have seen these episodes and I have forgotten quite a few things. This episode stars Amy who spent most of the series as a rat. Can't totally remember how that came about but I am sure I will.

This episode has Buffy deciding to get some normalcy in her life and join the Sunnydale High School Cheerleading Squad. During tryouts we see one of the girls catch fire and thus starts the ball rolling. As the days go by weird things start happening to the other hopefuls. Cordelia goes blind and another girls mouth disappears. Giles and the gang think it is the work of a witch. Amy is one of the hopefuls whose mother was one of the schools most decorated cheerleaders and we learn she is getting a lot of pressure from her mom. Once the results of the tryouts are posted as Buffy is first alternate and Amy is 3rd we see Buffy get drained of all energy. They find out that the Witch is the mother but has used a spell to put herself in Amy's body and vice versa. The Scooby gang does a spell and soon all is right with the world.

It was an okay episode with a few good laughs but not one of the best and certainly not one to remember.

4 out of 10 stakes.

Season 1 Episode 2: The Harvest

Not too much to say about this one as it was the conclusion of part one. The first Scooby Gang butt kicking takes place at The Bronze when the Vampires are there to suck all the blood from the youngins to help the Master be able to walk the earth and get some new leather pants. Buffy does her cool karate stuff while making one-liners between dustings and Giles, Willow, and Xander come in through the back, let some kids out, and then almost get killed themselves when attacked. But from fight one to the end they always succeed.

Poor Jesse gets killed off in this one but it did jump start his career and got him starring in movies like remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the failed NBC show Conviction, and 2 season as Milo on 24. Gotta love him!

So a good start to a great TV series!

Season 1 Episode 1 : Welcome to the Hellmouth

Ahhh, it all comes back to you when you start rewatching the episodes. I forgot about the corny little intro they do. I am curious when they stopped that, I guess I will soon see.

There is Buffy with her padded bra and he baby fat. It's weird to see her in the first season if you have more recent memories of the later season or her recent movies. Her cheeks are all puffy along with her butt.

Willow is looking the part of the nerd wonderfully in the 1st season. The clothes, the waifish body, the blah hairdo.

Xander is Xander. Definitely the opposite of Buffy when it comes to weight. He is a svelte man in this unlike his plumpness in the later seasons.

Cordelia, ahhh, same person episode one as she was throughout the series and Angel.

Giles is a little more uptight and British early on.

Some notable appearances would be Darla. I totally forgot that she was in Buffy or even in the first episode. Angel makes his appearance as well playing the part of the brooding vampire gone good. And jesus, the cross he gave her was big enough to go on top of an actual church. For some reason I thought it was smaller. Maybe it gets smaller in scale as the season rolls on. Ahh, Prinicpal Flutie, how could I forget about you, or more importantly what happened to you. Jesse, who you may know better as Milo on 24, was also in the episode.

The basic jist of this episode is getting to know the characters. Buffy is coming to a new school, Sunnydale, after getting kicked out of her High School in Los Angeles. We find out that she is a Vampire Slayer and Giles, the schools Librarian is a Watcher, who looks out for the Slayer. Seems Sunnydale is the location of the Hellmouth and it is about to open up. Angel makes his appearance to let Buffy know hat trouble is afoot and a Harvest will soon be happening and allow The Master to walk the earth. This of course is not a good thing. Xander and Willow get involved and thus creates the Slayerettes as Willow declares in a later episode, but I like the Scooby Gang. The episode ends on a cliff hanger as it is part 1 of 2.

All in all an pretty decent episode for a pilot. There is some really wacky camera angles and shots that thankfully are never seen again and the writing isn't half bad.

I will give this episode 5 stakes out of 10.

Why?

I have decided to start rewatching all of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer from beginning to end. In this Blog I will discuss each episode and then give it a score on how I enjoyed it. I will rate it using Stakes (oooh, how creative that I am sure it has been done before). So feel free to read along as I go through this journey and if you want feel free to post your feelings or reviews of the episodes. Have fun and thanks for reading!
